Campbell Wood

2016-Present

Campbell Woods joined the Marist Rowing coaching staff in the fall of 2015.

Campbell enters his 8th year with the Red Foxes at the helm of the men’s rowing program. His time at Marist has been marked with a steady improvement in team performance culminating in the team’s return to IRA National Championships in 2018 in the varsity eight category and continued presence, since then, among the nation’s top 25 men’s crews. Under Campbell’s leadership, the team’s power ranking has risen from 65th in 2016 to 22nd in the nation in 2018. In 2017 and 2018 the Marist Men placed 5th at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta followed with a 2nd place finish in 2019 and a 3rd place finish in 2021. In 2019 Marist completed a nearly undefeated regular season with 7 dual race wins and was ranked in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Coaches Poll in the top 25 for 6 weeks in a row. Marist Entered the 2020 Spring with a national ranking of 20th before the onset of COVID. The team raced an abbreviated season in 2021 which ended with a 22nd place finish at the 2021 IRA Regatta. In 2022 Marist continued its winning ways being ranked in the top 25 throughout the season placing 2nd at the prestigious San Diego Crew Classic and going on to place 21st in both the varsity and 2nd varsity eights at the 2022 IRA. At Marist Campbell has spearheaded a number of team initiatives including the founding of the Red Fox Navy Alumni Association and considerable upgrades to equipment and facilities. 

Prior to coaching at Marist, Campbell spent five seasons as the men’s varsity coach at Fairfield University. The team earned fourth place finishes in the MAAC Rowing Championships in 2012-14, and third place in 2015. Woods also increased on-campus recruitment, more than doubling the program size in five years while simultaneously putting an emphasis on the classroom by improving the team’s academic standards. In 2014 and 2015, the group achieved the second highest men’s team GPA on campus. In 2015, Campbell’s varsity and 2nd varsity eights both progressed to the semi finals (top 12) at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta (a program first)

Campbell rowed collegiately at Hobart College from 2004-05 and then at Oregon State University from 2007-09, where he reached the IRA National Championships in 2008 and 2009 placing 11th and 15th, respectively. He has also rowed competitively in the single, earning numerous race and regatta wins.

Woods graduated in 2009 from OSU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Science. He has gone on to earn a Masters of Business Management from Marist College in 2018. Alongside his position at Marist, Campbell served as the Head Rowing Coach for the Hudson River Rowing Association in Poughkeepsie from 2018 to 2019. He is currently the owner and president of Nelo Rowing North America and Momentum Rowing LLC.

In addition, Woods has an extensive background in the sailing and marine industry. He served as the head sailing coach at Willow Bank Yacht Club  in Cazenovia, N.Y., from 2003-07, the Norwalk Yacht Club in Norwalk, Connecticut, from 2008-09, and the U.S. Sailing Center of Martin County in Jensen Beach, Florida, from 2009-10, where he was a level 3 U.S. Sailing coach and an instructor trainer. Campbell spent five years as the sales and operations manager of Landfall Navigation, a marine outfitter in Stamford, Connecticut, from 2010-15.
