Men's Rowing Team and Red Fox Navy Alumni to Compete at Head of the Charles Regatta
This coming weekend the Marist Men's Rowing Team will be sending two crews to race at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) in Boston MA. At the same event, the team will also be hosting two crews representing our Marist Rowing Alumni called the "Red Fox Navy". The Head of the Charles is a prestigious event that takes place over three days always on the 3rd weekend of October each fall. Raced over a 5 kilometer stretch of the Charles River in the heart of Boston and Cambridge MA, the event marks the largest rowing regatta in in the world with over 11,00 competitors ranging from Masters as old as 95 years old and youth rowers as young as 14. The race is attended by enormous crowds of avid rowing fans as well as weekend trippers looking for a unique experience resulting in a yearly attendance of well over 300,000 people. Racing takes place in a "head race" or time trial format where boats start one after another in 10 to 15 seconds intervals each attempting to race over the 5km course for the fastest time. This year the men's rowing team will be represented by the Red Fox Navy, our alumni racing team, in the Men's Alumni 8+ and the Men's Club 8+ on Saturday and then by members of our current varsity rowing team in the Collegiate 4+ and the Collegiate 8+ on Sunday.
RED FOX NAVY CREWS
This will mark the 7th consecutive race for the Red Fox Navy at the Head of the Charles. Coming off a strong 18th place at last year's race the crew is excited to be back in action this fall. In 2024 we celebrated the success of Chris Carlson, class of '19 who rowed for Marist in our 2016 and 2017 campaigns before transferring to the University of Washington and eventually following his passion for the sport to the US National Team where he earned a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympiad in the Men's Eight. Chris has maintained a close friendship with the members of his class of '19 and last year agreed to join the Red Fox Navy for their run at the 2025 HOCR. Chris's presence and input to the training process for the alumni crew created a lot of excitement and energy for this year's athlete's and resulted in a deeper and stronger pool of talented oarsmen to join us for the 2025 rendition of the race. This ultimately resulted in adding a second entry in the club eight category. Chris arrives at HOCR off the back of another successful run with the US National Team this summer sitting in the stroke seat of the Men's Quad and taking 4th place at the FISA World Championships. Joining him are a group of exceptional oarsmen from across the last ten years including many team captains as well as recent Oxford Brookes University Rowing Team alumni Gavin Crouch '24 and Jordan Irving '22
The Men's Alumni 8+ will consist of
Ryan Lillis (coxswain, class of '18), Gavin Crouch (Stroke, Captain Class of '24), Chris Carlson (7, Class of '19), Morgan Stippa (6, Class of '18), Tadd Bindas (5, Captain Class of '19), Jordan Irving (4, Captain Class of '22), Axel Anderegg-Durwood (3, Class of '24 and current assistant coach), Ray Mattingly (2, Captain Class of '19), and Alexander Missert (bow, class of '22)
The Men's Club 8+ will consist of
Claire Connally (coxswain, class of '20), Dmitrey Guenther (stroke, Captain Class of '21), Brendan McLaughlin (7, class of '17), Matt Blaszczyk (6, class of '20), Kevin Coomey (5, Class of '18), Liam Cusack (4, Captain Class of '23), Sam Klamar (3, Class of '17), Jake Addison (2, Class of '25), and Thomas Graves (bow, class of '25)
Also of Note are Marist Alumni racing in other events
Chris Crawley (Captain, Class of '21) will be making his run in the Men's Championship Lightweight Singles in which he placed 2nd in 2024
AND
Brendan Mulvey (Captain, Class of '09) and Director of Racing for the Head of the Charles organization is racing in the men's Masters Singles on Saturday Morning
MARIST VARSITY CREWS
The crews racing for Marist this weekend will represent our first varsity eight crew racing in the Collegiate Eight Category and then a picked crew from the 2nd Varsity Eight crew to race in the Collegiate 4+ Event.
The varsity eight consists of Tessa Kurtzman (coxswain), Will Shockley (stroke), Ryan Tuttle (7), Charlie Latimer (6), Reed Livingston (5), Kevin Murray (4), Matthias Topping (3), Tristan Wistuba (2), Nick Scarano (bow)
The varsity four consists of Evie Disque (coxswain), Ian Sondhof (stroke), Austin Thomas (3), James Hadjandreas (2), and Jackson Bower (bow)
Coach's Comments:
"We are super excited to have such a great group of student athletes joining us for the Head of the Charles this year. The varsity oarsmen have been progressing rapidly at practices and showed some great promise at our season opener scrimmage with Williams two weeks ago. This past weekend we took a trip to Boston to recon the race course and the athletes are very excited to throw down their best possible races this Sunday! On the alumni side we have a huge number of athletes from the past ten years most of whom were coached by both of our current coaches Stratton and Woods and it's exciting to see them being joined by Chris Carlson, a truly elite talent who we're deeply proud of having contributed to his early development. The Head of the Charles is an extremely technical course and good results here not only require exceptional fitness, stamina and poise from the oarsmen but also highly strategic race management and superb driving skills from our coxswains and even a good dose of luck. We're excited to see what we can do on the water and we're also excited to see all of our Red Fox Navy members past, present and even future recruits at the event!"- Campbell Woods, Head of Marist University Men’s Rowing
